Follower plates are used to help maintain the prime of the grease pump, and are required for use with all greases except thin liquid greases in warmer climates (although it is still recommended to use them in these applications to avoid potential problems).
The follower plate sits on top of the grease and creates a seal which ensures that grease is not left on the sides of the drum, and prevents air pockets from forming around the pump suction area.
